ELLA FITZGERALD 100 YEARS!
To celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial birthday, JazzAscona presents a project that revives the extraordinary adventure of the most famous artistic couple in jazz: Ella and Louis Armstrong. The Ella and Louie Tribute Band, formed a few years ago and already admired in the international premiere at JazzAscona 2014, is now led by Michael Paz (who produces Allen Toussaint, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall) and brings together some of New Orleans’ most prominent jazzists: Mitchell Player (bass), Gerald French (drums), Leslie Martin (piano), and Todd Duke (guitar).
Ella’s music is interpreted by the English singer Eileina Dennis; after a notable career as an R&B and pop singer, performing alongside noted artists such as Randy Crawford, Paul Young, and the Italian rockstar Zucchero Fornaciari, Dennis found a new love: jazz. In the role of Louis Armstrong, instead, Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown, New Orleans artist, Grammy Award winner in 2010, who was emerged in the past few years as one of the most brilliant and successful trumpeters (and singers) in the Big Easy. In April 2016, the band released Timeless, which was nominated for a Grammy, as best vocal jazz album.
