A tribute to Fabrizio De André on October, 9 at Locarno’s PalaCinema
On Friday, October 9, at Locarno’s PalaCinema, JazzAscona will present in collaboration with the Fabrizio De André Foundation Onlus, a tribute to the great Italian singer-songwriter by Luigi Viva and Luigi Masciari for the release of the homonymous album "VIVA#DE ANDRÉ".
Presented for the first time in July 2018 at Südtirol Jazz Festival in Bolzano and for two sold out shows at Umbria Jazz Winter and in Milan between the end of 2018 and January 2019, VIVA#DE ANDRÉ is a concert featuring spoken word focusing on the story of the great singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André and his love for jazz, a genre he also played in his early years. VIVA#DE ANDRÉ is conceived, written and narrated by Luigi Viva, arranged and directed by Luigi Masciari.
Luigi Viva is a founding member of the Fabrizio De André Foundation and author of his biography "Non Per un dio ma nemmeno per Gioco - Vita di Fabrizio De André" (Feltrinelli) as well of the recent "Falegname di Parole - Le Canzoni e la musica di Fabrizio De André" (ed. Feltrinelli).
Most of the evening will be centered on the music by a quintet featuring some of the best Italian jazz musicians, Francesco Bearzatti (sax), Francesco Poeti (bass, bouzouki), Pietro Iodice (drums), Giampiero Locatelli (piano) and the acclaimed guitarist Luigi Masciari, who also took care of the arrangements and musical direction. Two tracks will also feature singer Oona Rea.
The Quintet will reinterpretate Fabrizio's songs from a jazzy angle, including songs like "La Guerra di Piero", "Valzer Per Un Amore", "La Città Vecchia", "Il Bombarolo", "Creuza de mä", "La Canzone di Marinella" "Mégu Megún", "La Canzone dell'Amore Perduto", "Il Pescatore".
As Luigi Viva points out : "The idea of a narrated concert is based on the absence/presence of Fabrizio’s voice. A political voice and one of civil commitment, which lives through De André's work and contrasts with the physical absence of the voice that can no longer sing for us. Alongside the story of the most important phases of his life, from his childhood to the passion for jazz and Georges Brassens, I tried to highlight another side of De André, also through previously unpublished audio contributions".
With the participation of Snarky Puppy’s leader Michael League on bass and oud, as well as multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi (Pat Metheny Unity Group, Will Lee, Steve Gadd), the band has just finished recording a CD and the album will be officially premiered in Locarno.
The evening will also host singer Dori Ghezzi, who married Fabrizio De André in 1989, after having the dramatic experience of being kidnapped with him by the Anonima Sequestri in 1979.
