Monty Alexander at JazzAscona: the star piano player tributes Nat King Cole
The great pianist will be on our shores for the second time on June 27th
The lineup for this 35th edition of JazzAscona keeps growing: the organizers announce the presence of Monty Alexander who will perform with his trio on June 27, in a tribute to Nat King Cole, in the series of celebrations that Ascona dedicates to the famous pianist and singer in his centennial. Entrance is free.
One of the undoubted masters of contemporary jazz, Monty Alexander is also one of the greatest pianists in the history of jazz. A cult figure who still, aged 74, tours the world relentlessly, delighting with his vibrant personality and soulful message. His career began in 1958; he is documented on more than 75 albums and is a perennial at jazz festivals and venues across the world. His Jamaican roots are tangible in the vibrancy of his approach. Alexander applies his aesthetics to a repertoire that spans across a wide range: the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae.
He is however also a pianist close to the classic jazz tradition: his work and inspiration have always been rooted in the history of piano jazz.
At JazzAscona 2019 – in a trio with bassist Hassan JJ Shakur and drummer Jason Brown – Monty Alexander will tribute the great Nat King Cole, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The concert will take place on Thursday June 27.
