Born in New Orleans in 1977, Jason Marsalis is the youngest member of the famous Marsalis family, one of the most versatile contemporary jazz drummers, and a talented vibraphonist. He started sitting in with his father’s band at the age of 7 and studied classical percussion at Loyola University in New Orleans. Before founding Los Hombres Calientes with con Irvin Mayfield and Bill Summers, he collaborated with various other groups. He left Los Hombres in 2000, at the peak of success, to work with acclaimed pianist Marcus Robert. Jason continues to work as a sideman with Marcus Roberts, Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis, Shannon Powell, John Ellis, and Dr. Michael White. Along with his father and brothers he is also the recipient of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award. He has recently released his second album as bandleader of the Vibes Quartet, “ The 21st Century Trad Band”.
