A surprising blend of sounds, an extraordinary voice and a great stage presence: here is the well-deserved winner of the 2017 JazzAscona Audience Award, London-based singer Randolph Matthews explores the roots of black music inspired by the great Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and Ali Farka Tourè. With his Afro Blues Project the artist skilfully combines blues, soul, beatbox, jazz and ethnic sounds. In a career spannin over two decades, Matthews has worked with Plan B, Herbie Hancock, SK Shlomo, Will I am, but also Maceo Parker, Amp Fiddler, Grace Jones, Jazzanova, Angelique Kidjo, to mention a few. He has tread the boards at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury, Umbria Jazz and is in residence at the renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.
