Where else but at JazzAscona could you see a single person playing five acoustic instruments at the same time? Ryan Baer, alias FRANG! –  known for an award-winning documentary at RIFFA (Rome Independent Film Festival), performances in HBO’s Treme, and compositions for FOX’s The Simpsons – accompanies his voice and harmonica with rhythm guitar, foot-operated percussion, and the Fotdella. The Fotdella is a full-size mechanical double bass, operated with the feet and designed by Baer himself. There is only one in the world, and it took seven years to perfect. Featuring piano-style pedals, Swiss-engineered mechanized fingers, and bicycle brake cables, it is a truly extraordinary instrument. Baer presents a mix of jazz, blues, and original compositions in a traditional style. You’ll see one person, but hear four.
