JazzAscona: A Festive Monday featuring Gospel and “Rockaboogie”

Gioele Pozzi

On Monday, June 29—a public holiday in Ticino—JazzAscona changes pace without losing any of its energy: the day kicks off with a gospel concert in honor of Saints Peter and Paul and continues with debuts, returning artists, and music throughout the festival grounds.

The highlight is the concert featuring Emma Nissen (5:00 p.m., Church of S. Maria della Misericordia), marking her second and final performance: an intense set that brings gospel to the heart of the festival, in a particularly beautiful setting.

The evening features some major debuts, starting with Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88s (8:00 p.m., New Orleans Stage), a pianist and showman known for “rockaboogie”—a blend of boogie, blues, jump, and R&B. Trumpeter Anthony Hervey (9:30 p.m., Blue LLama Terrace), one of the most promising young talents on the international scene, also makes his debut.

Alongside them, familiar faces return: Bert Joris and Dado Moroni (9:45 p.m., Stage Seven), for one last elegant concert, and Angelique (8:30 p.m., Stage Elvezia), blending soul and Jazz.

The day’s events also take place off the main stages, ranging from singer-songwriter Sabine McCalla (6:30 p.m., Acoustic Town) to the traditional Jazz of the Mauro Porro Quartet (6:30 p.m., Art Hotel Riposo), and including more intimate sets by the Filippo Valli Quartet (6:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Nostrana Jazzbar).
