Bert Joris, the poetic trumpet lighting up JazzAscona 2026
In an edition where the trumpet takes center stage, Bert Joris, Belgian trumpeter, composer, and arranger, could not be missing from JazzAscona 2026. Considered one of the most refined figures in contemporary European jazz, Joris is known for his lyrical and elegant trumpet sound, characterized by an introspective, melodic, and deeply expressive style. Alongside his solo work, he is highly regarded as an arranger and composer, particularly in the big band context. He has collaborated with leading musicians such as Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, Jimmy Cobb, Charlie Mariano, Hank Jones, Enrico Pieranunzi, among many others, as well as with numerous European big bands. Central to his career is his relationship with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, for which he has written and arranged numerous successful projects. Active in cinema, pop music, and education, he has received prestigious awards including the Django d’Or and the Flemish Culture Prize. His music combines jazz tradition, sophisticated orchestral writing, and a strong personal signature. This is his first appearance at JazzAscona together with his quartet.
